The Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) is a personal certification from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Candidates must meet its education and experience criteria and pass a 100-question, multiple-choice, open-book exam based on the 21st edition of the Fire Protection Handbook. It shows broad fire protection knowledge, but it is not a license to practice design in Saudi Arabia and it does not certify a company.
Key takeaways
- Eligibility follows one of three routes: an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree in a fire protection-related discipline plus 2 years of experience, an associate degree in such a discipline or a degree in another field plus 4 years, or a high school diploma plus 6 years.
- The exam has 100 multiple-choice questions, a 3-hour maximum, and the printed 21st edition of the Fire Protection Handbook as the only reference allowed in the room.
- It is delivered by computer at Prometric test centers worldwide, and NFPA says it is now available in Arabic and Spanish as well as English.
- The certification stays current with an annual renewal fee and recertification every three years with at least 50 points of documented professional development.
- In Saudi Arabia, CFPS does not replace professional accreditation by the Saudi Council of Engineers; good practice is for owners and consultants to treat it as one indicator of competence, not a substitute for proven experience.
What CFPS is and who awards it
NFPA awards the CFPS to individuals dedicated to curtailing fire loss, both physical and financial, who have reached a professional level through work experience and education and passed the certification exam. The body of knowledge is the 21st edition of NFPA’s Fire Protection Handbook, published in 2023, and NFPA says the exam was updated for the first time in 15 years to reflect it.
NFPA lists the professionals the certification serves: code enforcers, designers and engineers, fire officers, marshals and inspectors, fire protection consultants, loss control specialists, and risk, safety and facility managers. It is a broad credential across the whole field of fire protection, not a specialist certificate in one system such as fire alarm or sprinklers.
In the public statement of impartiality on its program page, NFPA explains that its certification department works with an external group of CFPS volunteers, the Certification Advisory Group, so that every aspect of the program is administered impartially and candidates are evaluated without discrimination.
Eligibility: three routes
The CFPS program requires candidates to show on their application that they meet one of the following routes. In every route, the experience must be verifiable work dedicated to curtailing fire loss, both physical and financial.
| Route | Education | Work experience |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a fire protection-related discipline from an accredited college or university, including engineering fields applied to fire protection | 2 years |
| 2 | Associate degree in a fire protection-related discipline from an accredited college or university, or a bachelor’s or master’s degree in any unrelated field | 4 years |
| 3 | High school diploma or equivalent | 6 years |
NFPA gives fire protection engineering, fire science, fire protection technology and fire service administration as examples of related degrees, along with mechanical, civil, chemical and electrical engineering. Qualifying experience covers roles that reduce the risk of fire, such as design, inspection and code enforcement, or reduce damage and loss when fire occurs, such as fire service, risk engineering and fire protection system design or installation.
The exam: format and content
The exam is a proctored, computer-based test at Prometric centers worldwide, with 100 multiple-choice questions, a 3-hour maximum and an open book. The official printed handbook is the only reference allowed. It may be tabbed in advance with permanent adhesive tabs, but sticky notes, movable flags and paper clips are not permitted. Candidates have 12 months from application approval to pass.
NFPA’s program page says the exam is now available in Arabic and Spanish, and NFPA publishes Arabic versions of the exam blueprint and the program overview, which makes preparation easier for candidates in Saudi Arabia.
The exam blueprint spreads questions across eight domains, weighted as follows in the 2025 program overview:
| Domain | Share of exam |
|---|---|
| Safety in the built environment | 16% |
| Information and analysis for fire protection and fire science | 9% |
| Fire prevention: programs, materials, processes and environments | 12% |
| Facility fire hazard management | 9% |
| Organizing for fire and rescue services | 9% |
| Detection and alarm | 14% |
| Fire suppression | 22% |
| Confining fires | 9% |
NFPA notes that the domains do not always match the handbook sections in title or content, so it is worth studying from the blueprint itself rather than the handbook index alone.
Keeping the certification: annual renewal and recertification
Once you are certified, a renewal fee is due every year, and holders must recertify every three years from the date on their certification documents. NFPA requires at least 50 points of documented professional development related to the fire and safety profession during each three-year cycle.
Points come from set categories, including professional practice, membership in fire and safety organizations, other fire and safety certifications, training, seminars and conferences, teaching, and publications. At least 16 points must come from three categories, training and professional development, teaching, and publications, with at least 8 from training and professional development. Holders who miss the recertification requirements are removed from the NFPA certification list and must reapply as new candidates.
Value and limits of CFPS on Saudi projects
The Practice of Engineering Professions Regulating Law states that no engineering profession may be practiced without professional accreditation from the Saudi Council of Engineers (Article 2), and that, unless otherwise stated, no authority may accept engineering work not executed by accredited engineers (Article 5). CFPS therefore gives no right to sign designs or drawings and does not replace that accreditation.
Its value lies in assessing competence: NFPA says employers regularly cite it as a requirement or preferred qualification. Good practice is to list it in prequalification documents as a desirable qualification for the safety engineer, project manager or maintenance lead, and to require that it be current at submission. Design and installation remain governed by the Saudi Fire Protection Code (SBC 801), Civil Defense approval, and the NFPA standards the project specification cites, such as NFPA 72 for fire alarm, NFPA 13 for sprinklers and NFPA 20 for fire pumps.
A practical prequalification wording is: “The safety engineer should preferably hold a current CFPS or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the owner”, with a copy of the certificate and the date of the last recertification. This rewards documented competence without excluding candidates qualified in other ways.
A practical plan to prepare for the exam
- Read the eligibility criteria in the candidate handbook and program overview, and identify your route.
- Collect proof of your work experience, such as employer letters and job descriptions, before you apply.
- Buy the printed 21st edition of the handbook, the only reference allowed in the exam room.
- Study to the blueprint and its domain weights, with extra time on fire suppression, safety in the built environment, and detection and alarm.
- Use NFPA learning paths or its 100-question practice exam if you want structured preparation.
- Book the exam within the 12-month window, and fit permanent tabs to the handbook before exam day.
- Start logging recertification points from the day you pass, using the NFPA certification management system.
Common mistakes and what drives cost
- Presenting CFPS as an approval of a company or its products, when it is a personal credential.
- Listing holders whose certification has lapsed in prequalification submittals without checking status.
- Studying from the previous handbook edition after the exam moved to the 21st edition.
- Bringing removable sticky notes in the handbook on exam day, which is not allowed.
- Leaving the annual renewal fee or recertification points until the end of the cycle.
Cost depends on the application and exam fee, the handbook, the training you choose, any retest fee and the annual renewal fee. NFPA publishes current fees on its CFPS page, so check them before you budget.
How AZEIDK helps
AZEIDK publishes practical guides to the standards specialists meet on Saudi projects, including the NFPA guides above, our ISO 45001 occupational safety guide and our LPCB certification guide. They are reference material for general understanding, not a substitute for the official exam reference.

FAQ
Is CFPS mandatory in Saudi Arabia?
We found no Saudi regulation that requires it. What is mandatory for engineering work is professional accreditation by the Saudi Council of Engineers under the Practice of Engineering Professions Regulating Law. CFPS is an optional professional credential that some employers or prequalification documents may ask for, in which case the project terms decide.
Can I take the CFPS exam from Saudi Arabia?
NFPA says the exam is available worldwide at Prometric in-person, computer-based test centers, and that it is now offered in Arabic and Spanish. NFPA does not list specific cities on its page, so check the available centers when you book, after your application is approved and you receive your eligibility number and scheduling instructions by email.
Do I need an engineering degree to apply?
No. NFPA accepts three routes, one of which is a high school diploma plus six years of verifiable experience in curtailing fire loss. A bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related discipline, including engineering fields applied to fire protection, reduces the required experience to two years, while a degree in an unrelated field requires four.
Which Fire Protection Handbook edition is used?
The 21st edition, published in 2023. It is the body of knowledge for the exam and, in its official printed form, the only reference allowed in the exam room. It may be tabbed in advance with permanent adhesive tabs similar to those supplied with the handbook, but removable sticky notes, paper clips and other movable markers are not permitted.
How long is the certification valid?
A renewal fee is due every year, and you must recertify every three years by submitting at least 50 points of documented professional development within the cycle. Holders who miss the requirements are removed from the NFPA certification list and have to reapply as new candidates.
How can an owner check that someone holds a current CFPS?
Ask for a copy of the certificate and the date of the last recertification, then look up the name in the online certification directory NFPA links from its certification pages, or contact the NFPA certification team. Good practice is to check that the certification is still current before award, not only at prequalification.
