The testing and commissioning stage helps verify that system components are functioning properly and that their functions are integrated within the project scope.
Testing and commissioning represent an important verification stage before handover. Fire protection and fire alarm systems undergo functional testing and review to assess their readiness, verify the required responses, and identify observations that need to be addressed before final acceptance.
Testing follows the project’s approved drawings and specifications, manufacturer instructions, Civil Defense requirements and the relevant NFPA standards, such as NFPA 72 for fire alarm acceptance testing, NFPA 20 for fire pump acceptance tests and NFPA 13 for sprinkler systems.
Once the tests are passed, the work moves to documentation and final handover, after which a preventive maintenance contract can keep the systems ready.
Do you test systems installed by another contractor?
Yes, after reviewing the drawings and the installation condition; any observations found before commissioning are documented.
Can the consultant or owner attend the tests?
Yes, and it is recommended so results can be accepted on the spot.
– Review system readiness and the scope of pre-commissioning inspections.
– Perform functional, signal, and control tests according to the system type.
– Verify response sequences and the included system interfaces.
– Document test results and observations, and repeat testing when required.
