About the project
Mall of Arabia sits on Madinah Road in An Nuzhah district, Jeddah, near King Abdulaziz International Airport, and is operated by Cenomi Centers. It opened in October 2008 and spans three storeys with a total area of about 261,000 m². It also houses KidZania Jeddah, a children’s edutainment centre.
Why fire and life safety matter in a multi-storey mall
In a three-storey mall of this scale, the open voids and long concourses typical of multi-level malls can carry smoke from one level to another quickly, which makes smoke control and escape distances central to the design. Shops, restaurants and entertainment areas each bring a different fire load, and fit-outs vary from tenant to tenant. The mall also draws families with children, including KidZania Jeddah visitors, who need an evacuation led by adults and staff. Alarm and fire fighting systems must cover the whole building and work together so management can direct visitors clearly to the exits, in line with the Saudi Building Code (SBC 801) and Civil Defense requirements.
AZEIDK’s role
AZEIDK supplied fire protection, alarm and security systems for Mall of Arabia and carried out their installation, testing and commissioning to the project requirements.
