TYCO Series DS-1 Dry-Type Fire Sprinklers – TY3155, TY3255 and TY3355

TYCO Series DS-1 Dry-Type Fire Sprinklers are automatic sprinklers designed for installations where the sprinkler, connecting piping or protected area may be exposed to freezing temperatures.

This product page combines three models from the same sprinkler family:

• TY3255: Pendent.

All three models use the same dry-type operating mechanism, 5.6 K-factor, standard response and standard coverage classification. Their primary differences are installation orientation and deflector configuration.

TY3255 Pendent:

A dry-type pendent sprinkler installed through ceilings where the branch line is located in a heated area and the protected space below may be exposed to freezing temperatures.

Typical applications include:

TY3155 Upright:

A dry-type upright sprinkler designed for installations where the system layout requires an upright deflector while the sprinkler barrel remains protected from freezing conditions.

TY3355 Horizontal Sidewall:

A dry-type horizontal-sidewall sprinkler installed through a wall, allowing the supply connection to remain in a protected area while providing coverage into an exterior or freezing environment.

Operation:

Under normal standby conditions, the inlet plug and sealing assembly prevent water from entering the dry sprinkler barrel.

When the rated temperature is reached:

• Fluid inside the glass bulb expands.
• The bulb shatters.
• The bulb seat is released.
• The compressed internal spring expands.
• The spring pushes the water tube and guide tube outward.
• The yoke withdraws the inlet plug and sealing assembly.
• Water enters the sprinkler barrel.
• Water discharges through the sprinkler.
• The deflector distributes water according to the selected orientation.

Manufactured Lengths:

Series DS-1 sprinklers are supplied in different order lengths to suit the distance between the branch line and the finished ceiling or wall.

The required length is determined by:

• Ceiling depth.
• Wall thickness.
• Pipe-fitting position.
• Ambient temperature.
• Minimum exposed-barrel length required to prevent freezing.
• Selected escutcheon type.

Order length must be measured according to the catalogue drawings because the sprinkler is manufactured to the specified length and should not be field modified.

Fitting Requirements:

Install 1-inch NPT DS-1 sprinklers only in suitable approved fittings, including:

• Malleable or ductile-iron threaded tees complying with ANSI B16.3 Class 150.
• Cast-iron threaded tees complying with ANSI B16.4 Class 125.
• Selected GRINNELL fittings under the conditions stated in the catalogue.
• Specified TYCO CPVC fittings for applicable wet-pipe installations.

Do not install Series DS-1 sprinklers into elbow fittings. The sprinkler inlet may contact the inside of the elbow and impair operation.

Dry-pipe installations must be arranged to allow complete drainage above the sprinkler and branch line to prevent trapped water from freezing.

Installation Orientation:

TY3255 Pendent:

• Install only in the pendent orientation.
• The deflector must be parallel to the ceiling.

TY3155 Upright:

• Install only in the upright orientation.
• The deflector must be parallel to the ceiling.

TY3355 Horizontal Sidewall:

• Install horizontally.
• The waterway centerline must be perpendicular to the back wall.
• The waterway must be parallel to the ceiling.
• The word TOP on the deflector must face the ceiling.

Installation Tools:

The sprinkler can be tightened using:

• A pipe wrench applied to the designated inlet band or casing.
• A W-Type 7 sprinkler wrench applied to the sprinkler wrench flat.

Do not apply installation tools to the frame, bulb or deflector.

After the ceiling or wall finish is completed, slide the outer escutcheon piece into contact with the surface without lifting the ceiling panel from its normal position.

Important Notes:

Models TY3155, TY3255 and TY3355 are combined under one product because they belong to the same Series DS-1 family and use the same dry operating mechanism. The primary difference is installation orientation and deflector design.

The final model, order length, temperature rating and escutcheon must be selected according to installation orientation, ambient temperature, piping system type, hydraulic calculations, project specifications and authority requirements.

Do not use a sprinkler with an exposed length below the required minimum in freezing environments, as cold conduction may reach water-filled piping.
