NFPA 2001, the Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems, covers two families: halocarbon agents and inert gases.<\/p>\n<p>CO2 also leaves no residue, but CO2 systems follow a separate standard, NFPA 12, because extinguishing concentrations are lethal. FK-5-1-12 is a clear liquid at room temperature that boils at 49\u00b0C and discharges as a nonconducting gas. Both are halocarbons, which extinguish mainly by absorbing heat, at about 4 to 12% by volume.<\/p>\n<p>Inert gases, nitrogen, argon or blends of them, extinguish by lowering oxygen. IG-541 is about 52% nitrogen, 40% argon and 8% CO2, and the EPA advises that its design concentration should give no more than 5% CO2. Inert gases cannot be liquefied, so they are stored as high-pressure gas and need far higher concentrations than halocarbons; one review (Robin, 2012) cites extinguishing concentrations of roughly 40 to 70% by volume, and the listed design manual sets the actual value. Halocarbons need a compact cylinder bank; inert gases need many more high-pressure cylinders, a larger storage room and a floor loading check.<\/p>\n<p>Every discharge briefly changes room pressure, which light partitions, ceilings and glazing may not withstand; inert gas systems in particular have been challenged by over-pressurization. Since 1 January 2025, Regulation (EU) 2024\/573 has barred new fire protection equipment that contains or relies on HFCs from the EU market unless required to meet safety requirements, while the EPA still lists HFC-227ea as acceptable. On Saudi projects, confirm current national requirements with the consultant and Civil Defense, ask the consultant to also check environmental import clearance with the National Center for Environmental Compliance (NCEC), and plan lifetime refills; our <a href=\"https:\/\/azeidkgroup.com\/en\/sa\/media-center\/fm200-fire-suppression-system-saudi-arabia\/\">FM-200 system guide<\/a> has more detail.<\/p>\n<h3>FK-5-1-12<\/h3>\n<p>3M&#8217;s 2025 annual report confirms that its PFAS manufacturing exit is complete, and Fike notes that 3M discontinued Novec 1230. Other manufacturers offer this fluoroketone under their own names, such as Fike&#8217;s SF1230, which Fike describes as UL listed and FM approved. Confirm any refill agent is listed for your system, as our <a href=\"https:\/\/azeidkgroup.com\/en\/sa\/media-center\/novec-fire-suppression-system-saudi-arabia\/\">FK-5-1-12 (Novec) system guide<\/a> explains.<\/p>\n<h3>Inert gases and Saudi conformity<\/h3>\n<p>Inert gases have zero GWP and sit outside HFC and PFAS controls, which suits owners with strict environmental policies.<\/p>\n<p>The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) Technical Regulation for Fire Control Materials and Equipment covers firefighting substances, lists ISO 14520 parts for agents including FK-5-1-12 and the IG inert gases, and requires a certificate of conformity from a notified body through the SABER platform; complete firefighting systems are outside its scope. Design follows the Saudi Fire Protection Code (SBC 801), mandatory in its 2024 edition since 30 June 2025, and Civil Defense requirements. Both are NFPA 2001 halocarbons, both need few cylinders, and both can protect normally occupied rooms within their exposure limits. FK-5-1-12 has a far lower GWP, while HFC-227ea is controlled under the Kigali Amendment. The room, the owner&#8217;s environmental policy, the listed system and long-term refill supply decide.<\/p><\/details><details class=\"az-faq__item\"><summary><h3>Is FM-200 banned?<\/h3><\/summary><p>Not everywhere. The US EPA still lists HFC-227ea as acceptable for total flooding, while since 1 January 2025 the EU has prohibited placing on the market fire protection equipment that contains or relies on HFCs, except when required to meet safety requirements. Saudi Arabia has accepted the Kigali Amendment, so check the current national position with your consultant and Civil Defense, and have the consultant also check environmental import clearance with the NCEC.<\/p><\/details><details class=\"az-faq__item\"><summary><h3>Can an existing Novec 1230 system still be refilled?<\/h3><\/summary><p>In many cases, yes, but not with just any agent. 3M has exited PFAS manufacturing, and other manufacturers now supply FK-5-1-12. Confirm that the refill agent is accepted under your system&#8217;s listing, and it is good practice to use a filler the system manufacturer authorizes. Agree the refill route with your maintenance contractor in advance.<\/p><\/details><details class=\"az-faq__item\"><summary><h3>Is it safe to stay in the room during a clean agent discharge?<\/h3><\/summary><p>No one should stay. Halocarbon and inert gas systems can protect normally occupied rooms within the exposure limits, but occupants should leave on the pre-discharge alarm. NFPA 2001 (2025 edition), as amended by tentative interim amendment (TIA) 25-1, requires an egress time study to verify that the maximum exposure time limits are achieved. Re-enter only after the room is ventilated.<\/p><\/details><details class=\"az-faq__item\"><summary><h3>Can CO2 be used to protect a server room?<\/h3><\/summary><p>Not if people enter it. CO2 total flooding uses design concentrations of 34% and more, while exposure above 17% can cause unconsciousness and death within a minute, and the EPA found that most reported incidents occurred during maintenance on or around the CO2 system.
